Website Word Counter

Enter any page address to see how many words it has, how long it takes to read, its headings, and the words it repeats most.

What you can use this tool for

  • Competitor research. Check how long the pages that outrank you really are, and what words they repeat.
  • Your own pages. Spot thin pages that need more depth, and check titles and meta descriptions in the same place.
  • Translation and writing quotes. Get a quick word count for a live page when pricing per word.
  • Content briefs. See the headings and key phrases of a page before you write something better.

A higher word count does not rank a page by itself. What matters is whether the page answers the search better than the others do. Use the numbers here as a guide, then judge the content.

Frequently asked questions

How does the website word counter work?

You enter a page address and our server loads that page, removes scripts, styles and hidden code, and counts the words that are left in the visible text. It then shows the word count, character count, estimated reading time, headings and the most repeated words and phrases.

What counts as a word?

Any run of letters or numbers counts as one word. Contractions such as "don't" and hyphenated terms such as "well-known" each count as one word. Menus, headers and footers are excluded from the main content count by default, and you can switch them back in with one click.

Why is my count different from another tool or from my editor?

Tools disagree on what to include. Some count navigation, footers and cookie banners; some count hyphenated words as two. Use one tool consistently when you compare pages, and compare like with like.

Does it work on every website?

It reads the HTML a server returns. Pages that build their text with JavaScript after loading may show a lower count than visitors see, and sites that block automated requests cannot be read. We tell you when we spot either case.

How many words should a page have for SEO?

There is no magic number. Pages rank when they answer the search fully, so look at what already ranks for your keyword and cover the topic at least as well. Use this tool to check those competitor pages, then write for the reader, not for a target length.

Is the tool free? Do you store the pages I check?

It is free with no sign-up. We do not save the pages you check or their text.
