AEO recognises that Google increasingly behaves as an answer engine — providing direct answers rather than just listing links — and optimises for visibility in those answer formats rather than just page rankings.
Traditional SEO focuses on ranking pages in the blue-link search results. AEO focuses on capturing the answer surfaces above those results — featured snippets, People Also Ask, knowledge panels, and rich results. Both share the same foundation (authoritative content, strong E-E-A-T, technical health) but AEO requires specific content structuring: direct answer format in the opening paragraph, question-format headings, appropriately formatted lists and tables, and schema markup that helps Google parse and surface your answer.
