Meta Description Checker
Check the title and meta description of one page, or of every page in your sitemap. See the character count for each, spot what is missing or too long, and download the results as a CSV or PDF.
Enter the full address of the page you want to check.
What this checker looks at
- Meta description length. A good description is 70 to 160 characters. Shorter ones waste space, longer ones get cut off in search results.
- Title length. Titles of 30 to 60 characters usually show in full.
- Missing tags. Pages with no description leave Google to pick text from the page for you.
- Duplicates. Pages that share a description are harder to tell apart in results. The whole-website report flags them.
Use the single-page mode to check a page you are about to publish. Use the whole-website mode before a relaunch or an SEO audit, then download the CSV or PDF and share it with your team.
Frequently asked questions
What is a meta description?
It is the short summary of a page that sits in the page's HTML. Search engines often show it under the title in results. It does not directly raise rankings, but a clear one can earn more clicks.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for 70 to 160 characters. Google cuts off what does not fit, and the limit is really about pixel width, so this is a guide and not a hard rule. Titles do best at 30 to 60 characters. Google may also rewrite either one to suit the search.
How does the whole-website check work?
Enter your website address. We find your sitemap (from robots.txt or the usual sitemap addresses), list the pages in it, and read the title and meta description of each one. We check up to 500 pages in a run. If your site has more, the report tells you how many were left out.
What do the statuses mean?
Good means the length is in the range above. Too short and Too long are outside it. Missing means the page has no title or no meta description. We also flag pages that have more than one description tag, and descriptions that more than one page shares, because those are worth fixing.
How are characters counted?
Every visible character counts once, including spaces, emoji and letters in scripts such as Hindi. HTML entities such as & are turned into the character they stand for before counting, the way a search engine would show them.
Does the CSV or PDF include everything?
Both list each page with its title, description, the character counts and the status. The CSV opens in Excel and Google Sheets and holds the full text in any language. The PDF is easier to share but can only show Western characters, so other scripts appear as question marks there. Use the CSV for those.
Is it free? Do you store the pages I check?
It is free with no sign-up. We do not save the pages you check or the results. The CSV and PDF are created in your browser.
Why could a page fail to load?
Some sites block automated requests, some pages need a login, and some take too long to respond. We show the reason next to the page so you can tell a real problem from a blocked check. This tool reads the HTML a server sends, so a meta description added later by JavaScript will not be seen.
Want more than a length check?
Meta descriptions are one part of on-page SEO. Our team can review the whole picture with an SEO audit, fix what holds your pages back with technical SEO, or plan new pages through content marketing. You can also count the words on any page with our website word counter.
